Kirin's are known as auspicious beasts. It is recommended that be purchased in pairs. They are regarded as protectors and guardians of good fortune.
A good place for them would be facing out your front door, having one on each side of the door. The carving with the ball under the right paw goes on the right side of the door, left paw on the left side. Some orientations say you should have them face one another.
Either way these guys are pretty cool and have a long history.
